Bernie Sanders’ Latest Nanny State Scheme is a ‘Meat Tax’ to Combat Global Warming

Sen. Bernie Sanders (I-VT) said last week that he will likely impose a tax on meat in order to prevent its consumption as a way to defeat the scourge of climate change.

“As you probably know, animal agriculture is to blame for the majority of climate change and is the leading cause of deforestation, water and air pollution, and biodiversity loss,” a female Sanders supporter explained last Friday at a town hall event.

“With that being known, what do you plan on doing to ensure that Americans limit their consumption of animal products?” she asked.

“Germany has imposed a meat tax in hopes of limiting this consumption,” she continued.

“What are your plans to stop these large corporations from further usurping natural resources and polluting the planet?” she reiterated.

Sanders happily paid lip service to his constituent’s irrational fears, claiming that he would be open to such a scheme if it meant bringing about an end to global warming.

“All I can say is if we believe, as I do and you do, that climate change is real then we are going to have to tackle it in every single area including agriculture, ok? And in fact, one of the things we want to do with our farmers out there is help them become more aggressive and able to help us combat climate change rather than contribute to it,” Sanders said.

“So we will certainly – you’re right,” he said. “We’ve got to look at agriculture, we’ve got to look at every cause of the crisis that we face.”

Other Democratic presidential hopefuls are bashing meat consumption on the campaign trail as well, as demonization of meat eating has become a popular talking point for liberals hoping to unseat President Donald Trump in 2020.

“Yeah, we’re going to have to make an investment as a country. It is not going to necessarily be easy. Here’s our generation’s opportunity to meet a true existential threat of this moment and I’m confident that that’s going to bring out the absolute best in us – nothing to be afraid of, something to meet head on and to overcome and do it together,” presidential contender and former U.S. Rep. Beto O’Rourke said in June.

“You see the planet earth moving towards what is the Standard American Diet,” presidential contender and U.S. Senator Cory Booker said in February. “We’ve seen this massive increase in consumption of meat produced by the industrial animal agriculture industry.”

“The tragic reality is this planet simply can’t sustain billions of people consuming industrially produced animal agriculture because of environmental impact,” he added. “It’s just not possible.”

The wholesale changes proposed by Sanders and other mainstream Democratic Party leaders would fundamentally transform the U.S. economy, spike the costs of food for struggling families, and put millions of jobs at risk. The Democratic Party, now openly socialist, is charging toward the radical left at a staggering pace.
