Thomas Massie Receives Dozens of Endorsements Against Establishment Primary Challenger

Last week, it was announced that the political establishment had drafted a primary challenger who will attempt to oust Rep. Thomas Massie (R-KY) from Congress in 2020.

Massie is taking the challenge seriously, and he has already assembled an array of endorsements that includes Kentucky leaders at the local level, legislators across the state, and the national lawmakers with the most conservative voting records.

“I am honored to be supported by these men and women, individuals who are standing beside me so I can continue to fight for limited government, life, secure borders and an America First foreign Policy,” Massie wrote in a press release. “With their support I am confident I will return to Washington to continue to drain the swamp.”

Massie’s national endorsements include Sens. Rand Paul (R-KY) and Mike Lee (R-UT) as well as House Freedom Caucus members Jim Jordan (R-OH), Matt Gaetz (R-FL), Andy Biggs (R-AZ), and Louie Gohmert (R-TX).

He also boasts endorsements from state senators, state representatives, county judge executives, county sheriffs, circuit clerks, county clerks, county attorneys, mayors, constitutional officers, property valuation administrators, and commissioners & magistrates from the state of Kentucky.

Todd McMurtry, a lawyer representing Covington Catholic student Nick Sandmann, will have his work cut out for him as he attempts to oust Massie in the primary race for the 4th District Congressional seat next year. He is hoping to rally Trump supporters against Massie.

“The reason that I am in the race is to support President Trump,” McMurtry said to The Courier Journal. “I think that’s what the people of the 4th District want out of an elected official, a congressman in Washington, and that’s what I intend to do.”

McMurtry has attacked Massie in the past for the legislator’s consistent stances in favor of liberty.

He most recently criticized Massie for his constitutional vote on war powers.

“If we go to war, it needs to be with the blessing and the support of the people and a clear mission that our soldiers can accomplish,” Massie said on December 9, 2020 on the House floor. “We do that by following the vision of our founding fathers — we debate it on the floor of the House.”

“Amongst all Republicans in Washington, Thomas Massie is considered the most anti-Trump Republican, the person that votes with the president the least,” McMurtry said in response.

In actuality, Massie has the most conservative voting record in Congress. He boasts a Liberty Score of 96 percent from Conservative Review, a 99 percent rating from The New American’s Freedom Index, and a 93 percent rating from the Club for Growth, a group that has frequently bestowed their prestigious Defender of Economic Freedom Award to Massie for standing firmly on principle.

McMurtry will have to put down a grassroots army and strong national support in order to defeat Massie. It will not be an easy task for the opportunistic attorney hoping to join the Washington D.C. swamp.
