Thomas Massie’s Bill to Abolish the Department of Education Gains Further Support

On February 5, 2021, Kentucky Congressman Thomas Massie introduced HR 899, a bill that would abolish the Federal Department of Education.

Liberty conservative congressmen such as Florida Congressman Matt Gaetz, Arizona Congressman Andy Biggs, Texas Congressman Chip Roy, Colorado Congresswoman Lauren Boebert, Georgia Congresswoman Marjorie Taylor Greene, and Arizona Congresswoman Paul Gosar have joined in co-sponsoring HR 899.

Georgia Congressman Andrew Clyde has now joined Massie in co-sponsoring this legislation. Massie noted this on April 4, 2022. The Kentucky congressman tweeted, “Thank you to @Rep_Clyde for cosponsoring my bill to eliminate the Federal Department of Education (HR 899).

The bill is one sentence:

‘The Department of Education shall terminate on December 31, 2022.’”

The Department of Education was established in 1979. In 2022,  the education department had a budget of $76.4 billion. For perspective, the Education Department’s budget stood at $14.7 billion in 1981.

Like all government agencies, the Department of Education has grown significantly and has done little to advance what it’s purportedly tasked with. Massie is right in trying to abolish the Department of Education. It’s a useless entity that creates significant make-work for parasitic bureaucrats, while usurping functions that traditionally belonged to local governments. In addition, this agency allows for the managerial Left to indoctrinate millions of youth across the nation.

Good on Massie for introducing legislation to end this abomination of a government agency.
